Wildfire Mitigation

Forest Ecology and Wildfire Mitigation

The ecology and management of western forests are connected to the recurrence of wildfires.  Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting has extensive experience with the complex relationships between fire (a key ecological process) and forest communities. Our approach to forest management planning integrates current conditions, historical conditions and desired future conditions to promote public safety and protect infrastructure from wildfire while fostering ecological resilience. We assist homeowners residing within the wildland urban interface (WUI), forest land owners, homeowner’s associations, state and federal agencies, landscape architects, open space planners, watershed groups and utility companies.

We have expertise in developing and implementing forest management plans to mitigate the risk of wildfire while achieving specific ecological management objectives. Ecological objectives include wildlife habitat enhancement, watershed protection, forest insect and disease control, and carbon sequestration.  Through collaborative relationships with other small businesses, we also provide wildfire behavior modeling, public outreach and surveys, stakeholder engagement, group facilitation and more.

At Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting, we have extensive experience with wildfire mitigation in the wildland urban interface (WUI).  In the state of Colorado alone, over three million people live in the WUI as of 2022. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) estimates the burned areas in the WUI have increased by 35% since 2005. In Colorado, the five most destructive wildfires have all occurred in the last 12 years. Megafires are becoming the new normal,  rather than the exception.

The Destructive Effects of Wildfires

Fires can impair municipal water supply systems, threaten utilities and infrastructure and diminish property values. Our staff has extensive experience conducting thousands of mitigation assessments for private homeowners. We also have expertise consulting for commercial enterprises and non-profit organizations.

Providing wildfire mitigation services for foothill communities as well as communities on the plains that adjoin the foothills is our specialty. We have worked in most of the counties along Colorado’s Front Range. Therefore, we are quite familiar with county land use codes in Colorado that require wildfire mitigation. Our mitigation plans will meet the requirements of land use planners as well as the needs of individual landowners.

For communities similar to those affected by the Marshall Fire, we can provide a mitigation plan to help protect your home or business.

Our Wildfire Mitigation and Forestry Services

Fire ecology and wildfire mitigation services:

  • Community Risk Analysis & Education
  • Defensible Space Layout for Wild Urban Interface (WUI) Structures
  • Home Ignition Zone Assessments
  • Fuels Treatment Priorities
  • Structure Ignitability
  • Emergency Preparedness and Evacuation Planning
  • Plan Implementation

Technical Guidance and Resources:

During past projects, we have worked with residential landowners to develop state-approved Forest Agricultural Plans.  These plans qualify landowners for a tax credit. Another area of expertise is developing stewardship plans for reservoir watersheds to mitigate the threat of wildfire.

Helping Communities

We can help local governments and community organizations develop Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP). A CWPP informs residents and helps them develop greater emergency preparedness. A comprehensive planning document for communities to can restore forest health and mitigate wildfire. These plans outline tangible and meaningful action that sets priorities for residents, spurring them to action.

Whatever your needs are, whether individual or community-wise, Blue Mountain can develop a plan for you.

Forests in many parts of the Rocky Mountain West have undergone significant changes since the late 1800s.  Forest density has increased leaving many areas prone to catastrophic wildfire as well as insect and disease. A forestry plan can lead to a healthier forest that can survive drought and insect outbreaks.

Whatever your wildfire mitigation or forestry needs, we have the expertise and experience to meet your goals.
