Wildfire Defensible Space of County Historic Structures

    • Client: Boulder County
    • Date: Jun 2016 to Aug 2016
    • Info: Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting conducted wildfire mitigation audits of 100 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places or as Boulder County landmarks.

Blue Mountain Environmental consulting provided services for wildfire defensible-space on 100 county-owned historic structures on 17 separate open space properties. The goal of the project, funded by a grant from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, was to create a viable defensible-space around the structures utilizing a multi-zone approach, with consideration to the values of the historic resources and cultural landscape, incorporating Colorado State Forest Service guidelines, BCPOS forestry/fire management principles, and property management plans.

Blue Mountain conducted wildfire mitigation audits and developed property prescriptions for each site. The assessment examined the ignition potential of the structures, such as the structure’s susceptibility to ignition from crown fire, surface fire and ember showers, as well as the zones of defensible space around the structures. The assessment included the prescription of a perimeter around structures that addresses flammable materials and flammable connections between structure and landscape.
